When driving in Europe it’s important to remember that each country has its own driving laws, many of which differ to those in the UK. Before travelling to any foreign country it is important to read up on the documentation you need, speed limits and other regulations.
In addition to the regulations applicable in individual countries, the following is a guide to accessories you either must have, or are highly recommended to have, when motoring in Europe.
| Spare Bulbs & Fuses | These are a requirement in many countries, and are handy to have, just in case. |
|---|---|
| “GB” Sticker | Compulsory. Failure to comply may result in an on-the-spot fine. Although euro-plates have been legal since 2001, in some countries outside the EU a conventional sticker is still required. |
| Headlights | If you are driving on the continent, then you must adjust the headlamp pattern to suit driving on the right, so that the dipped beam does not dazzle oncoming traffic. |
| Emergency Triangle | Compulsory in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Recommended to use in France, Germany, Netherlands and Portugal. |
| Fire Extinguisher | Useful to have regardless of the country you are in. |
| First Aid Kit | Requirement for some countries |
| Tow Rope | Always useful to have handy. |
| Reflective Jacket | Compulsory in Austria, Croatia, Italy and Spain. |
| Spare Fuel Can | Legal in some countries and illegal in others. If entering the latter, remember to empty it into your tank before entering. It is illegal to run out of fuel on the German motorway. |
